Alex Best who has been dating her fiancée on and off for three years, met him at a party on New Year's Day 2004
George Best's former wife Alex revealed that she is to marry businessman Howard Kruger after an on-and-off relationship lasting nearly three years.
Mr Kruger, 47, proposed to the 34-year-old blonde former air hostess in the early hours of New Year's Day.
The couple first met at a party on New Year's Day 2004.
Mr Kruger supported Alex during her divorce from the alcoholic ex-footballer a few months later, and Best's death the following year.
Mr Kruger popped the question as Alex tried to call her mother from a telephone box to wish her a Happy New Year as the clocks struck midnight.
The couple were on a night out in Slaugham, West Sussex, with friends.
Alex, a former contestant in ITV's I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!, said: 'We have been together on and off for nearly three years and we have had some awful ups and downs in that time.
"Having gone through so much together life moves on. It's 2007 now - forget about all the past and look forward to the future.
"He is my best friend. If anything was going wrong I could always talk to him about it. He is a really lovely guy.
"He said, 'Will you marry me? And thank you for everything you have done.'
"We have always been through everything together - with my divorce from George he was always there for me and I was there for him. It is New Year and it is a point to move on and look to the future.
"I want kids desperately as well. I am not getting any younger unfortunately. I would like to have kids as soon as possible. I also want a quiet and happy 2007."
But she added: "There comes a time when you can't live in the past any more. If you live in the past you go backwards rather than forwards.' Alex, is also launching her own fashion label this year, said of Mr Kruger: "He is such a lovely sweet, kind, generous man "
Alex Best won the 2004 "Rear of the Year" award, an asset first brought to the attention of the nation by Lord Brocket's admiring glances during her successful stint on "I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here". Since then she has been a guest presenter on ITV's "This Morning" and written a regular column in the celebrity magazine "Closer" as well as gracing the covers of many glossies, ranging from "Loaded " and "Maxim" to "Hello" and "OK".
